Marker text:
Alfred Cuthbert (1785-1856) was born in Savannah, the son of Colonel Seth John Cuthbert, brother of Congressman John Cuthbert, grandson of Revolutionary patriot Joseph Clay. A colonel of Volunteer Infantry, Alfred Cuthbert, after serving in both Houses of the Georgia Legislature and in Congress for several terms, was a United States Senator from 1835 to 1843. He succeeded John Forsyth who was named Secretary of State by President Andrew Jackson.
This house, built in the early 1800's, was Senator Cuthbert's home for a number of years. He died here and is buried in Summerville Cemetery at Augusta.
